Carbon Emission Reduction Measures and Strategies

Our Carbon Pledge:

  • Energy Conservation: Our core initiative focuses on reducing energy consumption across the office. We encourage staff to turn off lights, devices, and air-conditioners and cut out all unnecessary power usage.
  • Electrification of Fleet: Transitioning from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles to lower greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. We also possess electric ground service equipment (GSE) fleet, such as aircraft tractors, belt loaders, potable water carts, lavatory carts etc. to support ground handling operations. HKBAC will continue to purchase suitable electric GSE so that we can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable aviation ecosystem.
  • Paperless Office: Transitioning towards a paperless office environment. This involves utilizing digital documentation, implementing electronic signature systems, and promoting the use of online collaboration tools to minimize paper usage.
  • Waste Reduction Initiatives: Implementing recycling programs and reducing single-use plastics to minimize waste generation. We have established a designated “Green Corner” to facilitate proper disposal of recyclable materials and encourage responsible waste management practices. We have a coffee capsule recycling program that brings used capsules back into the aluminium value chain for use in car engines, bicycles, computers, soda cans, or even new capsules. We also provided frontline team members with reusable water bottles and powdered sports drink mix to promote hydration and reduce single-use plastic waste.
  • Employee Engagement: Encouraging staff participation in suggesting carbon reduction initiatives from their respective areas. We promote a greener workspace by encouraging staff to bring plants to the office, thereby enhancing air quality and creating an overall healthier, more aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally conscious office environment.
  • Sustainable Procurement: We make conscious choices wherever possible, for example with our branded merchandise which includes reusable items including travel cutlery and reusable coffee mugs. Each staff member has been gifted a cutlery set, encouraging a company-wide move away from single-use plastic.

Case Study: High Bay Lighting Enhancement Work for Aircraft Hangar

Project Overview
In a significant step towards achieving the HKIA 2050 Net Zero Carbon Pledge, we completed a major enhancement of high bay lighting in the Hangar 2 area on 19 July 2024. This initiative aimed to reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency.

Implementation Details
The project involved the replacement of 80 existing metal halide lamps with high-efficiency LED lights. This transition was strategically planned to minimise disruption to airport operations while maximising energy savings. The new LED fixtures not only consume significantly less energy but also have a longer lifespan, reducing maintenance costs and waste generation.

Results
The replacement of metal halide lamps with LEDs is projected to reduce energy consumption by approximately 40%. This translates to a substantial decrease in carbon emissions, aligning with HKIA’s commitment to sustainability. Furthermore, the enhanced lighting quality improves visibility and safety in the Hangar 2 area, benefiting both operational staff and tenants.

Future Outlook
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to implement sustainable technologies across HKIA. The success of the high bay lighting enhancement serves as a model for future projects, reinforcing our commitment to decarbonisation and operational excellence. As we continue to explore innovative solutions, we remain focused on achieving our Net Zero Carbon goals, contributing to a sustainable future for aviation in Hong Kong.

As a committed partner in the HKIA 2050 Net Zero Carbon Pledge, the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre is focused on advancing sustainable practices within the aviation sector. We are actively pursuing initiatives that reduce our carbon footprint and promote environmental stewardship. This includes implementing energy conservation measures, sourcing electric ground service equipment and promoting paperless operations. By working collaboratively with the Airport Authority and our fellow Business Partners, we aim to contribute to a sustainable future for aviation in Hong Kong, fostering innovation and responsible practices across the industry.
