Carbon Emission Reduction Measures and Strategies

  • To minimise its environmental impact, Cathay Pacific has consistently invested in upgrading its building facilities to enhance efficiency. It has installed a solar energy system on the rooftop of Cathay City, its headquarters building, with a peak capacity of 200 kilowatts. This system helps to reduce carbon emissions by up to 150,000 kg annually. In 2023, Cathay Pacific installed its 2nd solar-power generation system at the Airline Store Building, at a target of 100kW rating. This initiative harnesses clean, renewable energy from sunlight which reduces the building’s reliance on electricity generated by fossil fuels. By generating electricity on-site, it decreases the demand on power grids and minimises the overall carbon footprint.
  • Cathay Pacific has also installed an automated lighting system in our indoor car park and back staircases at the headquarters, reducing its energy footprint. Additionally, all outdated T8 fluorescent tube lights were replaced with LED lighting throughout its headquarters which could reduce carbon emissions by being more energy-efficient and having a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs. This decreases electricity demand, lowers cooling costs due to less heat output, and reduces waste from fewer replacements, all contributing to a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Headland Hotel is on the path of replacing the current chiller-based systems to a new Variable Refrigerant Flow system (VRF). The new VRF system could reduce carbon emission and energy usage through:
  1. Enhanced Efficiency: Optimises energy use by adjusting to varying load conditions, reducing overall energy consumption.
  2. Zoned Control: Minimises energy use in unoccupied areas, decreasing unnecessary energy expenditure.
  3. Heat Recovery: Recycles waste heat for simultaneous heating and cooling, improving energy utilisation.
  4. Elimination of Central Chiller: Reduces the need for large, energy-intensive equipment, lowering carbon output.

At Cathay, our commitment to reducing carbon footprint is more than just a policy—”it's a core value. We believe that decarbonisation is not just an option, but a vital necessity for our future success and resilience. Our efforts to cut ground emissions from all non-aircraft operations are focused on three key areas: electricity consumption, equipment efficiency, and vehicular emissions. We have set ambitious goals to reduce ground emissions by 32% by 2030 and 55% by 2035, using 2018 as our baseline. This is all part of our unwavering commitment to achieving net zero operations by 2050. We cannot do this alone. We need the understanding, action, and cooperation of all our stakeholders to reach these shared objectives. Together, we can create a more sustainable future.
