Carbon Emission Reduction Measures and Strategies

  • Introduced new cargo plastic cover sheets made from recycled materials in all AAT terminals. This initiative highlights AAT’s ongoing efforts to promote eco-friendly practices and sustainability initiatives.
  • AAT is the first cargo terminal operator in Hong Kong to introduce Autonomous Electric Tractors (AETs) at its terminal in early 2024. The introduction of AETs enhances cargo handling efficiency by boasting extended operating hours and the ability to work in inclement weather conditions, improving overall operational resilience and efficiency. They also represent a win for the environment by substantially reducing carbon emissions up to 35% compared to traditional diesel tractors.
  • In response to the growing market demand for temperature sensitive cargoes, AAT launched the first on-airport cold chain facilities with a complete temperature-controlled environment covering entire cargo handling processes, AAT COOLPORT, in late 2022. AAT COOLPORT is built with sustainability in mind. It utilises an environmentally sustainable, non-ozone depleting refrigerant to ensure the safe transport and storage of temperature-sensitive goods. It also features double doors, air conditioning, speed doors, thermal insulation panels and real-time temperature and humidity monitoring. All are purposely-built to minimise heat lost to achieve energy savings.

Sustainability has long been a cornerstone of AAT's vision. We have achieved a 50% reduction in carbon footprint since 2008, and have signed the HKIA 2050 Net Zero Carbon Pledge with a midpoint target of 55% absolute emissions reduction by 2035 from a 2018 baseline. We will continue to integrate sustainability principles throughout our operations to create long-term value for our stakeholders.
