Business Partner Profile

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl)

Hactl is the leading air cargo terminal operator in Hong Kong, serving more than 100 airlines and 1,000 freight forwarders. Its SuperTerminal 1 base is the world's single largest multi-level air cargo terminal, with a capacity of 3.5 million tonnes of air cargo per annum.

Business Partner Profile

Hactl complies with every relevant industry standard, including ISAGO (world’s first), WHO GDP (Hong Kong’s first), and all four IATA CEIV certifications (pharmaceuticals, fresh, live animals and lithium batteries), and the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification (Asia’s first). Hactl is an IATA-accredited facility for dangerous goods training, complying with the latest ICAO-mandated CBTA (competence based) format. Hactl trains its own staff, as well as those of third parties. Hactl’s wholly-owned subsidiary Hacis provides complementary value-added services including bonded road feeders connecting China with the world via Hong Kong, and e-commerce fulfillment services.

Hactl has consistently led the industry’s sustainable development through its Green Terminal programme launched in 2018. Its broadened sustainability agenda includes promoting diversity and inclusivity through collaborations with the local community. In 2023, Hactl’s new greenhouse gas mitigation targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the gold standard for sustainability, driving a smooth and commercially viable transition to net zero.

Carbon Emission Reduction Measures and Strategies

  • Implemented the near-term targets validated by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi), and the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong International Airport long-term carbon neutrality goal before 2050.
  • Improved energy efficiency of our facilities and equipment.
  • Procured low- or zero-carbon and energy efficient products, materials and services.
  • Increased the use of renewable energy.
  • Encouraged value chain partners including customers and suppliers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, through the Green Terminal Pact and the supplier engagement project.
  • Enhanced the climate literacy of our employees, suppliers, customers and other stakeholders.

Case Study: The first cargo terminal in Asia to use renewable diesel on ground services equipment

Hactl has been making significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint by modernising its ground service equipment fleet. The transition to electric models is a key part of their sustainability strategy, as evidenced by the recent integration of e-passenger step and e-conveyor belts into operations. Additionally, the use of B7 biodiesel and the exploration of renewable diesel options further demonstrate Hactl’s dedication to exploring a range of solutions to decrease emissions. The engines of all fuel-powered ground service equipment have been upgraded to be compatible with B7 biodiesel. Hactl is also piloting hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) with AAHK and Shell, making it the first cargo terminal in Asia to use renewable diesel on ground services equipment.

Hactl has made sustainability front and centre of its business, targeting net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Our targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming they are in line with a 1.5°C trajectory for global temperature rises. To achieve our SBTi targets, we have replaced internal combustion-powered vehicles and equipment with electric versions; procured Renewable Energy Certificates; and digitalised to eliminate paper use. To this end, we will continue to increase our use of energy efficient lighting and heating, and ventilation and air conditioning; work with suppliers to reduce emissions from purchased goods and services; and divert waste from landfill.
